American Woman

From deep inside the Colorado Yule Mine in Marble, Colorado, Francisco (second from left) inspects the marble from where the block will be cut with mine owner Rex Loesby.

The marble is hoisted onto a flatbed trailer at the Colorado Yule Mine.

A jubilant Francisco on top of 21 tons of marble.

The first chip is the hardest to cut

March 2001 - Francisco has already removed about 7 tons of marble to get at the point where the face of American Woman is to appear.

"Sometimes I get the chills" says Francisco, "when I see her looking back at me. I'll see her out of the corner of my eye watching everything I do."
